Book Talk: Pet Peeves

Today, let's talk about pet peeves. Bookish ones.

(Bad) Love Triangles
Love triangles can be fun, but those that are badly done are just plain annoying. Sometimes, the underdog is just so obvious and it doesn't take much time to actually figure out who the main character is going to end up with.

Cliffhangers (In a Standalone)
If the book actually belongs to a series, I think it is good.
But in a standalone, I want to know everything. What happened to ________?
Some people actually enjoy cliffhangers, but no, I don't want to use my imagination.

Changing Book Covers
I hate it when publishers just decided to have a totally different cover halfway through a series. It doesn't match the other books on my shelf! Change the cover of Shades of Earth. Now.

Deus ex Machina
One does not simply disappoint his readers by giving them a bad ending. Sometimes, authors just choose the easy way out. Killing the character and thus, solving ALL the problems. That is just bad. Bad.

I really need to expand my vocabulary. I need to stop using "bad", it is really bad.

So, what are your book pet peeves?

  1. These are some of my pet peeves too! You hit the nail on the head. The awkward love triangle is godawful. The cliffhanger in a standalone is atrocious. The changing book covers thing I guess I haven't really run across very much. One thing not on this list is the proverbial 2nd book syndrome of wah, wah, wah my heart is broken and now that strong courageous character you saw in the first book has disappeared not to return until the person that I magically fell in love with is back. That one is probably my number one pet peeve. Great post! Jaclyn @ JC's Book Haven

    1. I know that feel! Sometimes strong characters just become weak and that is really sad!

  2. I pretty much agree with you here, these are some of my book pet peeves as well.

I don't mind a good love triangle (although I do think they are starting to be over done) but when done poorly...SIGH.

When I come across cliffhangers in a stand alone novel it's not pretty.

Another pet peeve you didn't mention that I have with books...When they build up the anticipation for a big battle/save the world type thing, and you get very little action after all that hard reading, especially when it is in a trilogy or series.

    1. Preparing for a battle thing is pretty boring unless done well! But yeah, so far I haven't really read many books like that.
